The Reykjavik Branch was established on the 27th of April 1950, when Jón Auðuns, Dean of the Reykjavik Cathedral, was elected the first Chairman of the Branch.
From the time the Icelandic Red Cross was founded and until the establishment of the Reykjavik Branch the Icelandic Red Cross dealt with running all projects of the Red Cross society in Reykjavik.
From the moment of the formation of the Branch its membership and scope of operations have been increasing steadily. There are two sub-divisions, or leagues, inside the Reykjavik Branch: Women’s League and Youth League.
